I am a Californian who came to London to get my MBA. I had a clinic in Northern California for a number of years, where I worked on bespoke treatments using cosmeceuticals. After moving to London I studied International Business, and went on to work as a consultant for the beauty industry. During this time, I experienced an enormous amount of frustration at how the high street beauty industry worked. In my opinion, the customer's needs were the least important part of the business equation. It became more about marketing and end of day quotas. I came home really frustrated from a big event at a large beauty store chain, telling my husband Nick that I needed to get back into the treatment room. He challenged me to write a business plan. I did, and that is how Mortar & Milk was conceived. We are a totally bespoke skin retail store and clinic. Each new treatment client spends 45 minutes to an hour with me talking about lifestyle, medical history, diet, etc. We then take photos of the skin with the Observ 520 before deciding on treatment. I tailor the treatment totally to that persons skin. Our retail floor carries both "cosmeceuticals" along with high street brands, make up, supplements and lifestyle products.
I did the entire Level 4 Diploma in Aesthetic Practice course with Sally Durant Aesthetic Education & Training because I wanted to say that I was trained in the UK, and also and equally as important, Sally's knowledge is second to none and I knew that I would learn so much more. I was not disappointed.
I sat through an Exuviance training that Sally did, and her knowledge blew me away. I never wanted my further education to be easy, I wanted it to be thorough. It was a lot of work, but it was completely worth it.
It gave me the knowledge that I needed to help clients. It is not about how to apply product, it's about understanding the skin thoroughly and how it functions. It has allowed me to work closely with clients and I have been able to change peoples lives. I couldn't do that as well with just my previous experience. I am constantly told that "no one has ever explained this to me before"- I give treatments and advice to solve problems. Sally and Sue helped me learn the tools to make this happen. Our business has grown solely on word of mouth, going from a turnover of zero on opening day to £120,000 ten months into our first year. I could have never done that without my Level 4 education.
